Activities to promote the importance of early learning and literacy are taking place across BC this week.
Sunday January 21st was the start of Family Literacy Week and is the second year the province has decided to extend it to an entire week, allowing more time for events in libraries and other community spaces.
Children’s Librarian Kaitlyn Vecchio says there are other ways families can get their children to improve their literacy skills.
“It’s not just reading as a way to improve literacy skills, literacy can be gained in so many different ways, for example, cooking together or creating a comic strip and telling knock-knock jokes are ways too improve literacy skills.”
For the past 18 years, the Province has proclaimed January 27th as Family Literacy Day, and the events held across BC draw in lots of people.
“We have large attendance at our story times and our baby time programs, we also have new french programs. Just last year, in 2017, there was approximately 200,000 children’s material checked out at the library.” Explained Vecchio.
The government is providing $2 million to Decoda Literacy Solutions, who use the funding to support co-ordination of community literacy services and initiatives throughout the province.
The Prince George Library is holding their annual Munsch Mania this Saturday, where seven different story readers will read different Robert Munsch books.
