The Prince George Caledonia Nordic Skiing Club has received $175,000 to build a new snow-making machine.
This is all part of $5 million government investment called the new Capital Projects gaming grant, which is eligible for not-for-profit organisations in BC
Minister of Municipal Affairs Selina Robinson made the announcement and says this grant will help with infrastructure projects.
“There was no real grant program that took care of that, so creating a specialized grant program for that just makes it that much better and it facilitates our non-profits being able to deliver the kind of recreational arts, culture and sporting events.”
The ski club also received another $175,000 from the ministry of tourism to support the upcoming 2019 Para Nordic skiing Championships, which will be used for communication activities, such as livestreaming and media engagement.
President of the ski club, John Huybers says the machine should be ready in time for the championships coming to PG.
“Part of this funding is to start phase one of our snow making plan. We have an engineered plan in place already and we are ready to break ground in spring of 2018. So we are confident we’ll have phase one done in place by the fall of 2018 and ready to host the games in February 2019.”
Huybers says membership usually declines if the winter season is mild, so having the new machine will enable them to maintain conditions along with being able to open early and close later.
