A new nuisance bylaw unanimously passed the first three readings at Monday’s council meeting.
Councillor Brian Skakun was at the forefront of the motion.
“We’re going to go after property owners that have nuisance properties that have repeated calls to the RCMP, fire, city services and if they don’t clean up their act we’re going to bill them directly,” Skakun explains.
“I think that it’s going to work out as a cost recovery item and, not only that, I think it will be a good deterrent.”
Skakun first introduced the idea in 2016 following issues at the Connaught Inn.
“About a year and a half ago we suspended our business license because the RCMP had attended or received over 700 complaints which tied up resources,” he says.
“A lot of taxpayer money going to combat those kinds of things and what I decided is enough is enough.”
Skakun’s hope is the bylaw will be adopted by early spring at the latest.
