Romeo Dallaire to keynote Dr. Bob Ewert lecture

An internationally-renowned Canadian humanitarian will deliver the keynote address at next year’s Doctor Bob Ewert Memorial lecture.

UNBC has announced that Lieutenant General Romeo Dallaire will deliver the speech on April 11th at the Civic Centre.

Development Manager, Katherine Scouten with the University says Dallaire is a Canadian hero and celebrated human rights activist who will speak on his experiences in Rwanda.

“Also, his advocacy interests, genocide prevention, and ending the use of child soldiers, as well as mental health issues,” she says.

Dallaire is internationally recognized for his work in Rwanda in 1994, “Where he was very involved in the experience of the Rwandan people,” Scouten says. “When 800,000 people were murdered through one of the worst genocides in history.”

Scouten notes that Dallaire also received an Honorary Doctor of Law Degree from the university last year and she hopes that is merely the beginning of his long relationship with them.

“We hope that he will have more of a connection,” she says. “We have programs here at UNBC, like International Studies , Geography, they would very much value a deeper connection with General Dallaire.”
