Prince George shelters feeling strain of winter

Shelters across Prince George are all sharing a similar feeling: overwhelmed.

Active Support Against Poverty (ASAP) is among the group of shelters feeling swamped.

“We are normally funded for 30 beds and during extreme weather we are funded for 45,” explains Executive Director Audrey Schwartz.

“We are over-capacity, as are other shelters in town.”

Schwartz says they usually see a spike in traffic around the time of extreme temperatures but recently it’s stayed consistently packed.

“We don’t seem to be getting any dips of less people so it’s been consistently over-capacity,” she says.

“Of course that concerns us because it means people aren’t getting appropriate housing.”

For the immediate future, Schwartz expects ASAP to stay over-capacity but notes she is optimistic many people will be able to find appropriate and affordable housing in 2018.
