School District 57 saw some changes and celebrations in 2017.
Board Chair Tim Bennett says there are a number of things to be proud of, including the anniversary of the BCTF win in the supreme court, which brought in more teachers to the district.
Because of this win, they were able to re-open Springwood Elementry.
“In April the board made the decision that in order to comply with the supreme court ruling we would need to re-open Springwood and in a very short amount of time, our staff put a lot of work into getting Springwood ready to re-open. And in September it opened to 190 students.”
There are also a couple of personal events in 2017 Bennett says he will remember.
“Whether it was Remembrance Day ceremonies, Christmas concerts, or year-end band concerts. Those are probably always going to be a highlight of the year is seeing how hard our students work and it kind of helps remind me as a trustee the important work we do in terms of governing the district.”
2018 is the final year for the boards’ mandate and they will also be getting ready for the election taking place later in the year.
