Polar Bear Dip Seeing Great Enthusiasm Even With Freezing Temperatures

People may be ringing in the new year by braving cold water at the 17th Annual Polar Bear Dip.

The event takes place January 1st at the Ness Lake Bible Camp, where temperatures are expected to reach -17.

“Minus 17 is gold” says Program Director Dave Horton. “When it’s minus five and it’s windy and snowing the water feels really cold and it’s awful when you get out of the water. It’s just the worst because you can’t dry off fast enough. I’m actually really looking forward to Monday cause at minus 17 you dry off unbelievably quick and the water doesn’t feel as bad.”

Even though it’s suppose to be freezing temperatures, it hasn’t hindered people’s decision to show up.

“There’s more than interest there’s already thousands of dollars raised. There’s a group of people who are ready to compete against each other, I think a few of them have already broke two thousand bucks per person, so there’s some enthusiasm this year.”

People who plan to raise money and or dress up in costume for the even can win some prizes which include:

Prizes for top 3 fundraisers:
1st: $100 gift card to The Keg
2nd: BT Speaker
3rd: 2 Cougars Tickets

Prizes for 3 best costumes:
1st: Bluetooth Head Phones
2nd: Tim Horton’s Gift Card
3rd: NLBC Hoodie

Last year the event raised around $9600 for kids who can’t afford to attend camp, Horton is hoping to raise even more this year.
