The College of New Caledonia’s Sonography diploma program, slated to start September 2018, has been pushed back a year.
The reason why the new program has been delayed is because the school needed to make sure they’re creating a curriculum that meets the need of students.
Executive Director of Communications Alyson Gourley-Cramer says considering this is the second program of its kind in BC, there’s a lot they need to look at.
“Ensuring that our curriculum is accredited, it’s top quality for our students and for the health care needs of Northern BC and the province. Also ensuring that we have clinical placements because there’s 46 weeks of clinical experience as part of the Sonography program.”
The expectation is for 16 new graduates per year as a result of an investment by the province to fund the program.
Additional Sonographers will help to meet increasing demand due to a greater utilization of ultrasound technology within the health care system, an aging population that requires more diagnostic services and retirement of the existing Sonography workforce.
CNC is hoping the program will be ready to start September 2019.
