Quesnel Mayor reflects on arena opening, re-branding in 2017

It was an eventful 2017 for the City of Quesnel.

Mayor Bob Simpson, looking back at this past year, says besides the wildfires he’ll remember it as a year of massive investment in the city.

He says Quesnel’s new 20 million dollar arena sort of turned the page for residents.

“When you talk to people about how well that weekend went between the concert and the Canucks alumni game and the plaza with all the different vendors, we felt it was a turning point to make a shift on what happened in the summer with the wildfires into fall.”

Another thing that will be remembered in 2017 is the rebranding of the City and its new website.

Simpson calls it a “significant shift” that is already paying off.

“We were beginning to get some traction on that and our business community is certainly thrilled with it and we were getting inquiries from people relocating here and people coming up to visit here.”

Simpson says that was interrupted somewhat by the wildfires but he says that also gave them an opportunity to re-enforce some of the needs that they had to rebrand the community and to market it.

Other investments that stood out for Simpson were the new playgrounds in Lebourdais Park and Southhills and the completion of phase two of the West Quesnel Land Stability program.

Simpson says people can expect a lot more investment to come in 2018.
