Excavation likely a factor in Tuesday road collapse

The massive sinkhole that opened up near Massey drive on Tuesday was the result of a water main fracture.

That was the message from Gina Layte-Liston, the Associate Director of Public Works who says the previous work done in the area may have shifted the soil and contributed to the collapse of the roadway:

“The area where the excavation occurred caused the soil to be disturbed, and we’re thinking that as the material settled there was a shifting to the water main which may have caused the failure in the joint”

The sinkhole opened up just before 3 pm, causing widespread flooding of the street and a nearby apartment building.
