It’s something Prince George City Councillor Jillian Merrick says will benefit everyone involved.
At Monday’s council meeting, Merrick presented a report discussing an engagement with student services at post-secondary institutes in the city to further enhance the connection between post-secondary students and the community.
The Two Rivers Gallery, the Exploration Place, and the Outdoor Ice Oval have confirmed their interest already in participating in a program exposing the businesses to the students.
“Supporting the sustainability of those organizations through youth participation and student participation and ultimately providing really low-cost recreational and cultural access in the community to students who are on a budget,” Merrick says.
The current UPass program provides students free access to city buses, the Four Seasons Leisure Pool, and the Prince George Aquatic Centre.
“Since the implementation of the UPass our transit use has skyrocketed so students make up a very significant portion of our transit users,” explains Merrick.
“There are about 1,500 visits to our pools every year from students as well so it’s a very important part of student life in Prince George.”
The concept will now go back to student unions and student bodies, to gauge the interest of this initiative for an added fee.
Talks will begin in the New Year.
