Canada Jobs Grant just around the corner for BC

BC Labour minister Shirley Bond says she expects the application process for the Canada Jobs Grant to be available to workers at the end of October.

When BC signed onto the federal governments flagship jobs training partnership, some in Ottawa had hoped things would be up in running by the summer.

But Shirley Bond says they had a lot of work to do;

“We had to redesign the program. From our perspective we want to get it right. We want this to be outcomes based and make sure there is transparency and we can look at the grants given out and make sure they are accountable and we get the outcomes we need. So it’s a pretty major rework of the program”

She says changing demographics in BC makes the program very important;

“As wee look at numbers, when you consider an ageing demographic plus any new growth that we experience, we could see a million job openings by 2022. So the Canada Job’s grant and partnering with employers is very critical of that”

The Canada Jobs Grant will provide up to 15 thousand dollars in funding to workers for job training.

Two thirds of that money will come from the federal government with the rest covered by employers
