The Parsnip River Bridge is slated to be replaced starting in 2018.
The construction of the bridge is to help improve safety and capacity on highway 97 north.
The old overpass was built back in 1953, which has now become obsolete due to its size and height.
“Highway 97 North is used extensively as a corridor to transport people, supplies, services and finished products to job sites and to market,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Claire Trevena. “The new Parsnip River Bridge will be able to accommodate larger commercial vehicles and will provide a safer, more comfortable crossing for residents of the surrounding communities.”
Two kilometres of highway will be realigned to provide better sight lines for drivers.
A company from Burlington, Ontario was awarded the $18.5 million contract, funded by the Canadian government and the province.
The new overpass is expected to be fully operational fall 2019, with the deconstruction of the old bridge completed in spring 2020.
