Prince George Ice Oval facing rocky start to season

Rapidly changing weather patterns have been forcing the Prince George Ice Oval to switch from open and closed multiple times during its first week of operation this year.

Opening November 18th, a full two weeks before it has the last couple of years, the Oval has not met eye-to-eye with Mother Nature yet.

“Right now, we are opened and closed as the weather dictates,” explains Ice Crew Team Leader Lyle Dickieson.

“So with temperatures in the plus, it makes it really hard to stay open.”

The Outdoor Ice Oval Society is looking at refrigeration to help the Oval be less dependant on the weather.

“Because we have no refrigeration system there yet, we are totally reliant Mother Nature so it can really vary.”
