It was a game that came down to key shots and unfortunately for the UNBC Timberwolves, the Regina Cougars made two more and came away with a hard-fought 80-76 victory on Friday at the Northern Sport Centre (NSC).
The Timberwolves drop to 2-5 on the season despite getting a lights out performance from Jovan Leamy who recorded 24 points and 10 rebounds in 28 minutes of action.
“We didn’t take advantage of our posessions, we let the game slip away and we didn’t box out defensively to get stops and that’s what we needed to do to win the game.”
UNBC held first and third quarter leads of 24-16 and 58-55 but were unable to hang on thanks to Regina guard Brandon Tull who made the T-Wolves pay late in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback.
The Timberwolves had a chance to win the game with 19 seconds left but an inbound pass that found its way to James Agyeman was whistled down as a part of his foot was on the UNBC side of centre court.
“We have to be there menatally and not make those little mistakes, which cost you the game, it happened and we can’t really dwell on it. We have to comeback tomorrow (Saturday) and try and get the W,” says Leamy.
The game had a bit of a chippy tone at the start of the third quarter with three technical fouls called between both teams.
Regina improves to 4-1 on the season as both teams play again on Saturday at 7PM.
In women’s action, the Cougars made short work of the Timberwolves cruising to a 88-53 victory.
The lone bright spot in defeat for UNBC was the play of Madison Landry who potted 25 points.
She says the team didn’t quite have the same focus as they did a week earlier against UBC.
“I don’t think we came out with the same intensity, I think we came out a little flat and I also think we may have been a little intimidated by this team but tomorrow we are going to put some different things together and have a better result.”
Regina was led by Carolina Goncalves who posted a team-high 19 points.
The Cougars are improve to 5-0 on the season while the T-Wolves fall to 2-5.
Both teams play again tomorrow at 5PM from the NSC.
