More than 160 flagpoles have been refurbished by students and instructors of trade programs at the College of New Caledonia.
They commemorate Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan.
“It means a lot, it’s a good feeling for me and my fellow students as well,” says Dominic Gammon, a carpentry student who worked on the flagpoles.
“It’s something to give back, it’s not much but it’s something.”

Cpl. Darren Fitzpatrick’s family created the flags a few years ago but needed a refreshment because of the area they were being stored in.
CNC was able to complete the project thanks to a community partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion and the Independent Contractors and Business Association.
Each flagpole has a wooden plaque attached to it with the name and rank of a soldier; while British Columbia’s fallen soldiers, including Cpl. Fitzpatrick, have a special red base.

“These are going to last for a lifetime,” says Royal Canadian Legion Operational Stress Injury Special Section representative for BC and Yukon, Joe Elliot.
“This will be a beautiful tribute to our fallen.”
The flags will line the parade route on Remembrance Day.
