As we approach October, forest fires are clearly winding down in the area, but officials warn we aren’t entirely out of the woods.
Two massive fires the province is dealing with are: The Chelaslie River Fire at over 133,000 hectares, and the Mount McAllister fire (pictured) west of Chetwynd is roughly 2,600 hectares.
However, Information Officer Jill Kelsh with the Prince George Fire Centre says the McAllister fire is their last fire of note.
“We are starting to demobilize some of our resources, which means that there won’t be very many left by the end of the week,” she says. “At this time, we’re working on rehabilitation of the fires, just making sure the ground has been left in a suitable way for the environment to re-grow.”
Homes in the area are no longer in danger, and the Branch says all crews from out of the province and out of the country have gone home.
Though it’s too early for final numbers, Kelsh says $70 million has been spent so far, this fire season, in the PG Fire Centre, alone.
