A new grade 11-12 curriculum will have to wait to be implemented for another year.
The additional year is in response to feedback from educators in the K-12 sector, along with post-secondary partners, who need to ensure alignment of the new 10-12 curriculum with their admission processes and requirements.
“Success in the graduation years is very important for a student’s smooth transition to post-secondary opportunities,” says Education Minister Rob Fleming.
“That’s why we are giving our partners in the sector this extra year to ensure the new curriculum will serve our students, providing them with the best possible chance for future success.”
The grade 11-12 curriculum will be mandated for use in classrooms across British Columbia starting September 2019.
“If the government is hearing that more time is needed, that those concerns are taken seriously,” explains School District 57 Chair Tim Bennett.
“By allowing additional time for kinks to be worked out, it’s ensuring that the best possible curriculum is going to be presented to students.”
There will be a provincial-literacy graduation assessment aligned with the curriculum implementation, the first one is scheduled for January 2020.
A new grade 10 curriculum will be implemented as planned in September 2018 and will build on the new K-9 curriculum.
