Premier Christy Clark says she isn’t concerned over threats made by Malaysia’s state-owned oil and gas company to pull out of a $10 billion project off the North Coast.
Shamsul Abbas, The CEO of Petronas, says he’s ready to call off the project because of delays in the approval process, the province’s LNG tax and a lack of incentives.
He also told the Financial Times that Canada is “40 years behind the US in LNG development”, but the Premier says she doesn’t believe the project is in jeopardy.
“We’re in the process of negotiations,” Clark says. “What Petronas is doing is standing up to try to get the absolute best deal that they can get for their shareholders.”
She goes on to say “What we’re doing at the negotiating table is trying to get the absolute best deal for British Columbians and Canadians.”
Clark made the comments while signing an agreement with China to open a trade office in Vancouver.
