A conference is underway in Prince George looking at rural and resource development.
One of the organizers of “New Realities, New Relationships”, is Marleen Morris, Co-Director at the Community Development Institute with UNBC.
She says a delegates from across Canada, representing business, government, and First Nations are touring the city before discussing economic resilience and population aging.
“Many of these communities were built for young families, now those adults are aging and want to remain in place, so what does that mean for a community that is basically being constructed for young families?” Morris asks.
One of they keynote speakers at the event is Dr. Keith Storey, an Honourary Research Professor in the Geography Department at Memorial University in St. John’s.
His research focuses on oil, gas, mining, hydro and construction in Newfoundland, looking at the implications of growth and closure in resource-dependent communities.
The Rural Revitalization Conference runs until Saturday at the Coast Inn of the North.
