Stuart Rowlands took advantage of a Brett Bobier pass late in the first half beating T-Birds goalkeeper Chad Bush to give the UNBC Timberwolves a 1-0 win Friday against UBC from the North Cariboo Senior Soccer League fields.
UNBC came into the contest with an 0-10 all-time record against UBC since joining the Canada West conference.
After the game, Rowlands spoke about the win and the lone marker.
“He (Bobier) got it through to me and the defender got a little touch on it and it came right to me. I saw the goalie come out and the rest is kind of history.”
The defence of the Timberwolves did a superb job in taking a way time from UBC’s strikers, forcing them to shoot from the outside.
One of the catalysts was Bobier who was tasked with shutting down some of their most skilled players.
“We have never had a game like this against UBC, they are a top-class team and we knew it was going to be a hard game. They came at us and had chances but we held them off the scoreboard and it feels so good. We needed that for our team.”
“We needed that for playoffs, we needed that for our confidence,” said Bobier.
“We have been playing well and not getting the results, so we knew we could do that. But it feels amazing to accomplish it.”
The heavily-favoured Thunderbirds still had chances to tie the game, but ended up getting stonewalled by UNBC netminder Ty Venhola who made several saves to preserve the victory.
UNBC moves to 4-4-3, while UBC drops to 5-2-1; both teams play again on Saturday at 1:30PM.
