Orange Shirt Day recognizes the survivors and sufferers of residential schools in Canada.
The College of New Caledonia (CNC) hosted several speakers explaining their experiences and/or connections.
One speaker believes the next step in reconciliation involves public conversation.
“It begins with you and me. From there, you branch out, you keep on doing it, and you can’t let the past get into the present, otherwise, you go to the future and you’re just bouncing around.” – Clifford Quaw, Residential School Survivor
A moment of silence also took place in remembrance.
The annual event originally began in Williams Lake, recounting a six-year-old’s story of being stripped of her orange shirt in school.
