New fees from Air Canada and WestJet are giving travellers some baggage.
Both companies will be charging an extra $25 for your first-checked bag on Econo-fares.
Communications Manager Lindsay Cotter with the Prince George airport says the new fees may end up lowering ticket prices.
“What both of these carriers are doing is implementing a tiered system,” Cotter says. “So people who aren’t bringing checked baggage should probably see a lower ticketed price.”
“It’s all about options for travellers,” she says. “This is really just another option of a lower fare, if you don’t plan on bringing a bag on board.”
However, she says that means people will be charged more for each bag they bring, and will also start packing their luggage until it haemorrhages .
“But we do see that this may slow down the pre-board screening as more people will be taking on bags,” She says. “That’s something that we will be watching and monitoring. Both carriers will be offering this service in a few weeks time.”
Air Canada’s rules go into effect November 2nd, while Westjet will begin charging their fee as of October 29th.
