Criminology prof weighs in on Legebokoff sentencing

On Tuesday, we will learn the fate of Cody Legebokoff.

He was found guilty on four counts of first degree murder last week, but his sentence was held-off while presiding Justice Glen Parrett considers a number of things from: life in prison, no parole for 25 years, and registering Legebokoff as a sex offender.

Neil Boyd, Director of Simon Fraser University’s Criminology Program has been following the trial and says being registered as a sex offender is the least of Legebokoff’s problems.

“If the judge determines for consecutive terms of ineligibility, that is, he may have to serve 50 years or even 75 years before he has any chance of being eligible for parole,” Boyd says. “I’m not sure precisely what has happened in that regard, whether there has been any recommendation, but that’s certainly a possibility.”

Boyd notes offenders like Legebokoff live out their days in prison under watch not only from guards, but other inmates who know his history.

“Insofar that he is a sex offender, rapist, a rapist – murderer, yes, that may mean he goes into protective custody, he will certainly be a target in General Population of a maximum-security institution,” he says.
