The District of Vanderhoof is still mulling potential uses for the old Kwik-Save building.
On Monday council voted to spend $8,000 cleaning up and sealing the property from birds. Metal soffiting will also be replaced and trusses will be cleaned up.
Mayor Gerry Thiessen says District staff is planning public consultations for the fate of the building. “We’ve asked them to go away and come back with a couple of ideas, but also a process of how to hear from the community of what we can use that building for in the future.”
He says a recycling depot, youth centre and tourism building have all been suggested as good fits for the property.
“But we certainly would love to hear from the community as well, and we are going to go through a process in the winter after Christmas, finding what the community really needs and if there’s other options.”
The estimated cost for the removal of hazardous materials in the building is $160,000.
