MP Cullen to introduce anti tanker bill

The MP for Skeena / Bulkley Valley will start the fall session of parliament with a bang.

Nathan Cullen says he will introduce a bill banning oil tankers on the North Coast, while also requiring the National energy Board to give greater weight to public opinion before approving major projects.

He couldn’t speak to specifics before introducing the bill in parliament , but would say that it was inspired by the conduct behind Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline.

“I’m happy that I’m able to take some good from what has generally been a pretty bad experience, to try to improve the situation in Canada and also confirm that under our government and potentially under the current parliament Enbridge Northern Gateway will not be a possibility,” he says.

Nathan Cullen admits getting support for this bill will be tough with a Conservative majority in power, but he thinks he can get some local MPs on his side on such a controversial ballot-box issue right before the federal election.

“I’ve got some confidence that I can turn some of those Conservative votes now and get some of those MP’s backing such a bill,” Cullen says. “Because it will make sense for their constituents and you either change their minds or you change the MP.”

The parliament begins its fall session Monday.
