City under Special Weather, Air Quality statements

Due to the recent wildfires, Environment Canada has issued both a Special Weather and Special Air Quality statement for Prince George.

Smoke is causing poor air quality and reducing visibility in our city and Vanderhoof, resulting in the “Smoky Skies bulletin.”

The smoke isn’t expected to go anywhere soon, so you’re advised to avoid any physically demanding work outside and to stay indoors with windows closed.

Current windy conditions are also a concern throughout the area.

The wake from a southbound cold front has created northerly winds. This wind is expected to weaken throughout the day.

Environment Canada is also expecting thunderstorms through the Central Interior today. These should be brief but winds could reach 70 km/h. There is also a risk of dry lightning.

The BC Wildfire Service believes these conditions could pose challenges to wildfires containment efforts.
