More than 1,000 volunteers sign up to help nearly 7,000 wildfire evacuees in Prince George

In just one day – its first of operation – the Volunteer PG centre had nearly 400 people sign up to help wildfire evacuees.

Since evacuees began arriving in the city, about 1,400 people have registered as volunteers and 400 have been scheduled by the City for volunteer activities.

If you’re still interested in signing up, you can fill out this form on the City’s website or contact the Volunteer PG Centre at 250-614-7835. The Centre is currently open from 8 am until 8 pm, seven days a week.

The number of registered wildfire evacuees in Prince George is approaching 7000. As of this morning, 5,404 adults and 1,369 children had registered at the Emergency reception centre at CNC for a total of 6,773 displaced people.

Included in the count:

  • 576 are in group lodging at CNC and the Northern Sport Centre;
  • 672 are in RV parking;
  • 3,360 have found alternative accommodation, many staying with residents; and
  • 587 are staying in commercial lodging around the city.

The Northern Sport Centre now has space for nearly 700 people.

Bill Glasgow is coordinating Salvation Army volunteers.

The Salvation Army is using the cafeteria and the kitchen at CNC to feed both evacuees and volunteers. The crew of 45-50 volunteers is serving about 250 at breakfast, 450 at lunch, and 500 for supper. They are also providing about 1,500 snacks throughout the day.
