The Rainbow Flag is now waving outside of City Hall to celebrate Prince George’s 20th annual Pride celebrations.
Members of City Council, the Lheidli T’enneh, and Prince George Pride were on hand to raise it Wednesday morning.
Pride President Stacey Hewlett says supportive actions like this mean a lot.
“For a lot of years, there was a big struggle with City Hall and having the support of city council and in the last six or eight years, maybe a little longer, we’ve had that support and it really does make a difference,” she says, “We have the support of the Lheidli T’enneh and to have them come out today and welcome us to their traditional territory I think is a beautiful thing. That’s again acknowledging the diversity of this community and the acceptance and love that everybody has and we’re working together. It’s just phenomenal.
“Events like this (raising the flag and Pride Week) could save lives in a sense and save people from not being them and to be able to be a part of that is incredible.”
Mayor Lyn Hall acknowledged this flag-raising is another way the city shows its inclusivity.
“It’s just important and it’s what we do here in Prince George and I can’t stress strongly enough how diversified our community is becoming and anytime we can recognize that I think is a good thing.”
Prince George Pride events run all weekend starting with a pub night tomorrow and end with a street party Saturday night.
