Fire ban takes effect Thursday

By noon Thursday, you’ll need to extinguish any open burns.

The Prince George Fire Centre is banning any fires larger than a 0.5m x 0.5m, which includes grass, waste, and slash burns, sky lanterns, tiki torches and fireworks.

Fire Information Officer Amanda Reynolds anticipates our current dry conditions will continue and says this restriction is an important precaution.

“Forest fuels have dried out and we are into our normal ridging patterns where we have hot and dry temperatures and we’re just helping prevent human-caused wildfires.”

The fine for not complying with a fire restriction tripled last year from $345 to $1,150. Reynolds adds administration fees can also run up to $10,000 and more serious infractions can cost up to $1,000,000 and a year in jail.

The restriction is in place until the beginning of October or until notified otherwise.
