Over 100 officers, firefighters, sheriffs, students, and athletes ran in Tuesday’s Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.
Between registration ($2,000), 50/50 draw ($1,980), and barbecue ($400), the run brought in about $4,400. The emergency services’ car wash last month brought in the difference.
RCMP Corporal Craig Douglass was running with a local athlete, something he says was a special experience.
“He was telling me about the sport that he’s involved in and how he really enjoys running with us and to push him to be better. You can’t make that up, I mean it was heartfelt and sincere from this individual and really makes you think that these events are worthwhile and are worth putting the effort into.”
The RCMP fell just shy of its goal, but Douglass believes they’ll still hit it.
“I think there will be more money coming in as of yet so I’m confident we’ll hit that $6000,” he says, “we’re happy with that. That’s a pretty good effort for the event that we had.”
The annual run has raised over 3 million dollars for Special Olympics BC since 1990.
