Garth Frizzell is now the Third Vice-President for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). The vote took place during last week’s FCM convention in Ottawa.
The advocacy group – which has representatives from 90% of the nation’s townships, cities, and counties – communicates ideas from the municipal level to the Canadian government. Recently, this included a new poverty-reduction plan and a trip to Ottawa to discuss infrastructure needs.
Each year, the board votes on a member from a designated area to become the Third Vice-President. Three members from BC were up for the 2017-2018 nomination: Frizzell beat out Victoria Councillor Chris Coleman and Langley Councillor Bob Long.
The three-term Prince George City Councillor has been an FCM board member for the past eight years. He most recently held the position of vice-chair of International Relations and has also been the chair of the Standing Committee on Finance and Intergovernmental Relations, Chair of the Governance Working Group, and Chair of the BC Caucus.
Frizzell will move up and become the Second Vice-President in 2018-2019, the First VP the following year, and then the FCM President in four years.
