Hundreds of athletes woke up early and headed down to Carrie Jane Grey Park Sunday morning to take part in a number of YMCA events.
First up was the annual YMCA Road Race, which invites men and women of all ages out for either a five- or 10-kilometre run.
Jacqui Pettersen finished the short track with a time of 20:02. Not only was that the fastest time among all women in the age 19-49 category, but also the fastest time among women running 5k.
“I feel fantastic! I had some good people out there though, pushing me along the way, some of the other runners were running pretty fast as well and it was good to have them out there.”
Pettersen, who recently ran in the Boston Marathon, has gotten used to running longer distances but says she was “pleasantly surprised” with her results today. Even for an athlete as experienced as she, Pettersen proves you can always strive to be better.
“Darn the two seconds! I was hoping to be under but I’m pretty pleased with my time.”
Pettersen’s placement also earned her a $50 gift certificate to Stride & Glide, which she plans to use on new running shoes.
Finishing the short track in 22:12 was 15-year-old Adam Flett, the fastest male in the 18-and-under category.
Draped in a Boston Bruins sweater, and wearing his lucky Bruins hat, the Duchess Park athlete was excited with his finish as well.
“I’ve come first a couple of times but I beat my [personal best]. Last year I came in 24 minutes and this year I came in 22 minutes so it feels pretty good.”
The Road Racers barely had time to catch their breath before the kid’s event began. Announcers and award winners cleared the stage so all the young athletes could warm up for the Colour Fun Run. They ran around the field adjacent to the YMCA and occasionally through clouds of chalk. Each started with a white t-shirt and finishing wearing a rainbow.

12-year-olds Carson Baker and Nakles Kadonaga each enjoyed themselves and the sunny weather.
“It was pretty fun, I like the colours. I got splattered a lot. I got some pink, I guess,” says Baker, trying to make sense of his shirt, “green, and I think some purple.”
While both washed up, they reflected on how important it is for kids to be active.
“I think it’s good so you stay fit,” says Nakles.
“They have to, otherwise they can’t develop any skills when they’re adults,” added Baker, “just keep running, keep training, it’s going to get easier and easier. Just challenge yourself.”
It seems the event’s mandate is getting through. The YMCA of Northern British Columbia puts on the event to promote healthy living, families, and communities.
