The community of Blackburn is about to see a lot of new neighbours.
Council approved development of 85 lots in an undeveloped area by L&M Engineers.
Councillor Brian Skakun says it will go a long way to build the profile of a community he says has been “under-serviced”.
“Some of the residents out here clearly spoke in support of this,” he says. “Administration wasn’t supportive of this, because they thought it was urban sprawl, but I think with what they’re going to do, specifically in this neighbourhood, because Blackburn hasn’t had a lot of development.”
“If it would have happened in the west of town, or the north of town, then I wouldn’t have supported it, but Blackburn, for sure, I support it,” Skakun says.
He also notes it’s good news for Blackburn Elementary, “You’re going to get new families, kids, I think it’s just good news all around , because if the school was to ever shut down, it would be a real travesty,” Skakun says. “There’s going to be some more economic development and neighbours coming in, so I think it’s good news for Blackburn and the community as a whole.”
The developers say the homes are expected to cost between $400,000 to $500,000.
Water and sewer extension work in the new subdivision is scheduled to be done by the developers by December 31st, 2017.
