Councillor Albert Kohler says residents are suffering from “tax fatigue ” and he proposed a cap on budget development to alleviate it.
His push to make sure the tax levy would not rise beyond 1.5% was not successful at Monday night’s Prince George council meeting, but council did rally to amend the motion to make that cap one of several options available.
Kohler says the fight is still on.
“I wanted to put administration under a little bit of pressure,” he says. “I want to say ‘try something, try 1.5% and we’ll see whether it’s good enough.”
“The tax payer makes the final decision and we are elected by the taxpayer to say if this is okay or not,” Kohler says.
Next week, the finance an audit committee will meet and look at the draft budget, taking that budget cap into consideration.
