You’ve probably noticed the distinct stench of fire smoke in the city this morning.
Fire Information Officer Jill Kelsh says the rain front that has moved in has caused the smoke to increase, like pouring water onto a campfire, but the cloud cover has kept that smoke locked in the air.
It is so condensed a smoke advisory has been issued for the area.
“A lot of the smoke that is coming off a majority of our large fires is settling in Prince George rather than going up into the atmosphere so that’s the reason it’s more smokey in Prince George [Monday] than it usually is,” Kelsh says. “Most of the smoke is from the Chelaslie River fire.”
The Chuchi Lake fire near Fort Saint James has prompted an evacuation alert that Kelsh says affects 10 homes and one fishing lodge.
The evacuation alerts and orders caused by the China Nose fire have been greatly reduced.
Luckily, the smoke and rain combo isn’t as bad as what we experienced last month, as pictured above.
