Lisa Kerley of Williams Lake won the Simon Fraser Ladies Open at the P.G. Golf and Curling Club. The 41-year-old Kerley finished the 36-hole tournament with a score of 165 (rounds of 85 and 80) to post a four stroke victory over defending champ and 8-time winner Betty Ann Shiels (who finished with a 169 total). 65 golfers competed.
–Former Prince George Track Club member Alyx Treasure earned gold in the women’s high jump at the Under-23 NACAC (North America, Central American and Caribbean) Championships in Kamloops. Treasure captured the 20-22 year old age class with a leap of 1.85 metres. Her nearest challenger (Shanay Briscoe of the U.S.) was a distant second at 1.76m. Treasure was one of 35 members on the Canadian team.
–Canada’s under-18 hockey team, which includes Jansen Harkins of the Prince George Cougars, began the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament with a 5-1 victory over
Switzerland in Slovakia. Harkins did not pick up a point against the Swiss but did score for the Canadian team in a 7-5 exhibition victory over the Czech Republic. Canada has won the annual summer tournament six consecutive years and will meet Sweden Tuesday and Slovakia Wednesday.
–The Prince George Spruce Kings added toughness to their lineup when they acquired 19-year-old
forward Frankie Spellman from the Kenai River (Alaska) Brown Bears of the North American Hockey League in return for future considerations. Last season in Kenai River, the 6’1” 200lb Spellman, from Des Moines, Iowa notched 7 goals and 8 assists in 52 games to go along with 123 penalty minutes. The Spruce Kings open training camp August 29th at the Coliseum.
