Cullen offended over inquest process into Lakeland and Babine

A single inquest into two deadly mill explosions in Northern BC isn’t sitting well with a local Member of Parliament.
Nathan Cullen, MP for Skeena – Bulkley Valley says while the inquest in Prince George will bring closure for families of the Lakeland mill tragedy, it won’t do justice for families in Burns Lake looking for answers after the Babine explosion.
“The idea that folks can’t even have a proper hearing in their own community where the disaster took place is offensive to me,” Cullen says.
Though he appreciates the inquest, he says it’s insulting what the government takes as a priority.
“We’ve spent months looking into missing salmon on the Fraser and millions of dollars … for god’s sake, people died in these tragic events,” he says. “It was easily preventable, and the provincial government seems to just want to pick a box instead of dealing with this in a respectful and meaningful way.”
The BC Coroner’s Service announced both incidents would be addressed at the March 2nd, 2015 hearing.
A jury could make recommendations to prevent another tragedy happening again.
