The Gitxsan First Nation is shutting down all rail traffic through it’s territory.
This action is part of an eviction notice on its property, and begins at 10 p.m. Wednesday night.
Negotiator Beverley Clifton Percival says many groups have complied with the notice.
“I think there isn’t anyone who misunderstands, they have all left the land,” she says. “We don’t want confrontation or violence, we are simply asking people to respect our rights.”
Percival says the eviction stems from the federal and provincial government’s offer for their land between the Kitselas and Kitsumkalum First Nations, which they claim is illegal.
The lock-down stretches from Smithers to Terrace.
