Dust advisory issued for Prince George

There’s a dust advisory in effect for Prince George.

The BC Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with Northern Health, has issued this warning for local residents due to a high concentration of coarse particulate matter.

They say this is likely to remain in effect until rain comes down or when the streets are cleared of traction material as the highest levels are near busy roads and industrial operations.

Eryn Collins with Northern Health says this can be a potential health hazard.

“Much like when our air quality is compromised, we just want to encourage people, particularly those with chronic underlying medical conditions that now is not a good time for strenuous outdoor activity.”

Collins adds this is specifically a concern to infants, the elderly, and those who live with diabetes, and lung or heart disease.

In addition, the City of Prince George has prohibited all open burning, backyard and land-clearing, recreational fires, street sweeping activities, and wood-burning appliances.
