BCHL governors discuss two franchises possibly on the move

There are currently 17 teams that make up the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), but two could soon be on the move.

The league conducted its semi-annual board of governors meeting in Richmond this week, which addressed a number of possible changes for the upcoming 2017-18 season.

In a statement, the BCHL says they’ve directed their Franchise Committee to review a transfer application as a result of talks with West Kelowna Warriors owner Mark Cheyne and a group interested in moving the reigning RBC Cup champions to North Delta.

While nothing has been set in stone as of yet, the committee is, as per regulations, to make a recommendation to the board of governors in what they think is in the best interest of the BCHL.

The statement goes on to say they must also determine a timeline to when this potential transfer would be voted on.

In another case, there have been several speculations about the Nanaimo Clippers and their possible impact from a relocating Western Hockey League (WHL) team.

The City of Nanaimo will be holding a referendum on March 11th, where residents will decide if they want to proceed with the construction of a new arena capable of hosting a top junior franchise.

The Clippers’ future can not be dealt with until knowing the results of the referendum are.

The BCHL board of governors have also changed the number of players on a team from 22 to 23 beginning next season.
