Prince George-based lawyers chosen as newly appointed provincial court judges

Seven new provincial court judges have been selected by the BC Judicial Council; two of them from Prince George, and both are female.

Lawyers Cassandra Malfair and Susan Mengering will represent the Northern region, and Chief Judge Tom Crabtree says they have remarkable dedication to their communities.

“They are highly qualified, highly skilled lawyers that enjoy good reputations in the community and people of the North area of this province.”

All seven candidates had to meet certain requirements, followed by an approval from the province’s attorney general, and will be replacing judges who have either retired or moved on to the senior court.

Judge Crabtree says some of the criteria includes 10 years of practice as well as a strong legal reputation.

“Some of the other attributes would be respect in the community as well as their willingness to travel and sit in all subject areas of the court’s jurisdiction.”

Both Judges Malfair and Mengering will be based in PG and Judge Crabtree adds he and his committee are excited for the region’s future.

“We know over the course of the next few months due to the changes in our compliment, there will be a need to take on the role of providing justice.”

They will each begin their practice on January 9th, 2017.
