COS makes rare bear rescue

The BC Conservation Officer Service got an interesting call Wednesday.

In six inches of snow and in -25 degrees Celcius weather, the COS got a call about a lone black bear cub on the streets of Sinclair Mills, about 100 km northeast of Prince George.

Deputy Chief Chris Doyle believes it had been away from its mother for a while.

“When it was found on the road it was fairly weak, indicating that it had likely been out for some time in the cold and as well, the sow was nowhere to be seen.”

The COS isn’t sure why the cub wasn’t hibernating or where the mother could’ve been. Doyle says it’s “not often” that the COS finds an orphaned bear out these temperatures.

The cub is headed to the Northern Lights Wildlife Society in Smithers. It’ll be kept there throughout the winter, and hopefully released in the warmer months.img_2434
