Downtown student housing a high priority for city in 2017

The Prince George Chamber of Commerce got a sneak peak into the city’s future today.

Mayor Lyn Hall and City Manager Kathleen Soltis presented the city’s 2017 development plans during the Chamber’s final luncheon of the year.

While there are many things in-store – like better digital communications, a new website, and possibly re-investing in the Four Seasons Pool and Fire Hall #1 – Mayor Hall says student housing is “probably at the top of our list when it comes to trying to re-develop the downtown.

“We know that we need more people downtown to spur on business and to help businesses out that are out there now and so we’re working very very hard to try and get student housing in the downtown core.”

He believes two prime locations for condo-style housing are at Sixth Avenue & Quebec Street and Seventh Avenue & Victoria Street.

The boom in downtown businesses helps draw people to the area. He says new hubs like Kask and the upcoming CrossRoads brewery are “key pieces” to developing downtown.

Many downtown businesses and students both agree with the need for downtown living.

Hall says Prince George City Council and city staff will keep working to attract developers and investors to start these projects.
