Prince George housing construction projects down in November: CMHC

Prince George’s construction activity was down for the month of November compared to the same month in 2015.

Only 19 housing units, single and multiple, were in the process of being built; 44 were constructed by this time last year.

While the number may be small, Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation Analyst Taylor Pardy says there are some positives.

“The first 11 months of the year, housing starts in Prince George are actually up approximately 19%, and this is largely driven by a jump in multi-unit starts early on in the year.”

Taylor also anticipates the number will be higher before 2017 begins.

“New home construction will be supported by a combination of low mortgage rates; it’ll generally keep construction moving along at a steady pace, along with demographic change in the area; it’s kind of fuelling things and keeping things steady.

There have been more than 300 total housing starts for the Prince George area since the beginning of 2016.
