On the 27th anniversary of the Ecole Polytechnique massacre that took the lives of 14 female students and staff, BC Minister of Public Safety Mike Morris is speaking out to recognize the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
“Violence against women in any society, as far as I’m concerned, is unacceptable and it’s still a problem here in British Columbia and across Canada and we have to do everything that we can to stop it. We’ve come a long way since 1989 when these young ladies lost their lives but we’ve still got a long way to go.
Morris says he saw far too many examples of sexual and domestic violence against women during his time as an RCMP officer.
“This is everybody’s responsibility. It’s long been my belief that safe communities are everybody within the community’s responsibility to keep it safe. We’ve got a vision of a violence-free BC. We’re a long ways away from that but i am committed to working toward that goal.”
The BC Coroner recently released a report on domestic violence. It found that the north has nearly twice the number of intimate partner homicides as any other region.
