Prince George Public Library starts Food For Fines program

Are you behind on returning some books?

The Prince George Public Library has begun their Food For Fines program, which allows people to have some grace on their late fees by bringing a non-perishable food item.

For every item brought to the library, $2 will be taken off your late fee, up to $30.

Communications Coordinator Amy Dhanjal says the organization the library is donating to wasn’t a hard choice to make.

“We’ve had a great relationship with the Prince George council of seniors over the years, so I think it was a natural fit. They rely entirely on donations to make up their food hampers for seniors, so we wanted to help them out.”

Dhanjal adds the program, which runs until the end of December, will also donate to other local organizations.

“Anything that we collect after mid-December will go to other local food banks and food hamper providing organizations. Last year, we were able to collect around 18 boxes of food, so we’re hoping to top that this year.”

Last year, the library packed 18 boxes of non-perishable items and waved over $530 in late fees.
