Local MP calls Northern Gateway dismissal a political decision

Conservative MP for Prince George, Peace River, and the Northern Rockies Bob Zimmer is weighing in on the rejection of the Northern Gateway Pipeline project.

While he’s pleased with the approvals of the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain project and the Line 3 Replacement project, he believes the dismissal of Enbridge was purely political.

“To see that Northern Gateway went through that same process and yet get rejected, an approval with 209 conditions approved to go forward with 209 conditions, to us it’s strange that one would be rejected even though it had received previous approval.”

Since the announcement made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday, 31 indigenous groups have come out to protest out of a lack of consultation.

Zimmer says with nothing proceeding, Aboriginal and Metis groups have been left out in the cold.

“We’re concerned about their communities too and the jobs that they were going to bring to these communities, and now those jobs simply won’t be coming.”

Despite the Fed’s rejection, Zimmer says there is a silver lining as Kinder Morgan and Line 3 will provide more jobs and infrastructure to those seeking opportunities.
