Prince George City Council is moving ahead with their referendum question on continuing to fluoridate the city’s water supply.
Monday night, city council approved the official wording on their referendum question – “Are you in favour of the City of Prince George fluoridating its water supply?”
Councillor Brian Skakun admits it is a passionate issue with people strongly for and against fluoride in our drinking water.
“I’m not going to dismiss one side, and necessarily support the other side,” he says. “I’ve supported fluoridation in the budget, we all have over the years, most of us. People are very passionate this issue, but you know, that’s part of democracy.”
However, due to the way council passed the resolution in 1954, this referendum will not be legally binding, “but it still does have some traction,” Skakun points out.
“My goal is to also get voter turn out up,” he says. “We’re hoping with the fluoridation question on the ballot, even though it’s not binding, we might encourage more people to vote, especially young people.”
Voters take to the polls for this referendum at the same time as the municipal election – November 15th, 2014.
