BC Coroner identifies man who died in RCMP custody

The BC Coroners Service has identified the man who died in Prince George RCMP custody early Monday morning.

51-year-old Jamie Wilford Shanoss was a Prince George-resident and Gitxsan Nation member.

Shanoss was arrested on Sunday night and taken to the downtown Prince George detachment between November 20th – 21st. During a cell check shortly after 2 AM Monday, an officer noticed Shanoss was unresponsive. Emergency services arrived and tried to resuscitate him but failed.

Both the BC Coroners Services and the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) are investigating the incident. The IIO will determing whether an RCMP member committed an offense while the Coroners Service reviews the events leading up to the fatal incident and prepares recommendations to prevent something similar from happening in the future.
